"Humans use rules in an empire or country in order to maintain their culture and civilisations"
The ancient society has a great impact and has a connection with our modern society. When we say ancient society, we usually refer to ancient civilisations. We are not talking about cavemen like last term but this time we will talk about how the government uses rules in order to maintain their culture. Ancient civilisation and modern civilisation are both connected with each other because they both involve a government controlling them to maintain their culture. Also the fact that the ancient society was actually the cause of the modern society.
The ancient civilisations we will speak off are Greek, Rome and China. Referring to the 8 features of civilisation (or so), that is how we are going to explain each innovation from then that we still have now. We actually have to skip cities because these happen everywhere mostly because of food (you can learn more about cities in term 2) which every city has now and then. We will then skip to feature number 2, government. Romans had to experience 3 different types of government systems which are monarchy, republic and empire. We use these today in our modern society. In Indonesia, we are a democratic/republic country which means that decisions are made by the people in the public and not by governors which is probably the reason for demos. In Europe, some places have monarchy which means that they have kings and queens. Unfortunately, it seems to be that there is no such thing as an empire in the modern society. However, we could confirm that democratic and monarchy is still used back in Rome and in the modern days. Religion is very well reflected in our modern society. China's religion was christian and buddhism. China although did not only have buddhism as a belief back then, they had taoism and confucianism. The thing that should be kept in mind is that taoism is actually a philosophy and so is confucianism. However, just because these are philosophies, they can still be considered as a belief thus treated as a religion. These beliefs happen to be present in our daily life and according to the internet, buddhism and taoism is very popular these days. Suppose you are a fan of Percy Jackson, you'd hear all these things about Greek gods and Roman gods and that is actually inspired by what the Greeks and Romans believed back then. They believed that multiple gods control everything in their daily life. We'd call this polytheism which is the belief in multiple gods. Its not like we believe in multiple gods but the myths has inspired many people using the myths to write many stories or sometimes variations just like in Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan (read and you'll know what I mean)
In China, job specialisations and social classes didn't have much. It seems to consist of peasants and an emperor. It didn't seem too fair in the Qin dynasty for your books would be burnt and you would be forced to build huge architectures. However, they all had the simple jobs which involve bakers, butches and blacksmiths. We would usually have these today except blacksmiths are not really called blacksmiths today but instead they are made in factories.
Arts and architecture is very important in all three civilisations because it is built to honour the gods. Greece had many statues of gods. For example, they actually had a huge statue of Zeus at Olympia. Zeus was a Greek god of Greek gods (does that make sense?) and it was so huge that it WAS one of the 7 wonders of the world but something happened to it and it seems to be a mystery till now. Romans and China did this too, they would build temples to worship their god(s). We still have these today. At our church, there would be a few statues of God or Jesus and we would pray to them. This is similar to what they did back then where they would pray and make sacrifices in front of the statues and hoping it would reach their god and grant their wish. An example of this is the statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro which is basically what the name says. A huge statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro. Rome had colosseums and in the modern day, we have stadiums. We do the same things in them which is for entertainment and sports.
Speaking of sports, public works is all about that. Greek had special olympics that were performed to honour the gods. It was first performed in 776 BCE in honour of the god Zeus because he was the god of all gods in the history of gods. Back then, only men that spoke Greek were allowed in the olympics. Married women weren't allowed to participate but instead they had a celebration in honour of Zeus's wife Hera (goddess of marriage). Sports from acting to chariot racing was performed in the olympics. Nowadays, we have our own versions of the olympics. From winter to summer olympics and now men and women not only from Greece compete but EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the WHOLE entire world plays in these events to represent their countries.
Lastly, we have writing. Now writing was used for so many things back then. From farming, counting sheep and calculating stuff. The Greek alphabet consists of symbols and over time, symbols evolved into letters although no one is quite sure how it happened but it did help a lot in our modern days. The Greek alphabet was read from right to left. So now you'd be wondering why is it so different from what we have now? Well the answer to that is because it kept evolving over the many years and soon it became to what we have now.
In conclusion, the ancient civilisation has created a huge impact on the modern society and without it, we wouldn't have what we have today. They are the very reasons why we can survive today. Without them, would we have statues about these many gods that people believe in? Would we have fun sport games? Would you even be able to open and read this essay?! You wouldn't even be seeing these words. How did they do this then? For sure it isn't easy maintaining a civilisation the way it is for about 200 years or so but it is possible with only one word, rules. Its something we both have in common and has barely changed over all those years. That is why we can agree with our unit title and our global context, key concepts and related concepts. Globalisation and sustainability means to influence and maintain cultures through governmental systems that come from the rulers power. Therefore creating a successful civilisation. That is my understanding of the unit and statement of inquiry. Long story short, rules are the reason for sustainable cultures.
